Here is a new poster with a little bit of a different feel.<br />
It utilizes a photograph that I took 2 Autumns ago, on the way back home from the Reclamation Exhibition I did at Hermitage in Virginia.<br />
It was a place that sold jellies and salted hams and such, and they had this enigmatic pumpkin house out front.<br />
<br />
I thought the photograph would be an exciting starting point for a poster. To me, it speaks of the thrill of the chill, that starts comin' on with Autumn.<br />
Of course, as this the second to last show played at UCLACC, their is exciting new change in the air for this venue as well (they will be moving to PaperHand Puppet Intervention's 'olympia' down the road in Saxapahaw there after!)<br />
<br />
No doubt, there is a rich patina of good music and community on the sanctified cinder block walls of that space. (in fact, i'll never forget when owner Marj handed me a marker at the end of a gig, and commanded yours truly to enscribe our mark on those very walls, a proud birth of the ZamBamBooGee logo...)<br />
<br />
I hope I can get a good photo of the band on the bench in front of UCLACC.<br />
That would make an even better poster, but in the mean time, I am liking this one, for its bright descending column/cascades of pumpkins, which, like some kind of jumbo beaded curtain, seem to sentry the entry of a semi-sacred space.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
THE KRAKEN</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For those not yet familiar, the Kraken, located at Dobson’s
Crossroads, out on fabled Hwy 54, was for many years a biker bar. It has a
rough hewn look to it, that makes it somewhat reminiscent of a Western saloon,
say somewhere in the high Rockies. And with a cozy honky tonk feel, it is
perhaps truest to the name roadhouse we have in these parts, these days.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Maybe for this reason, over the years, and maybe even more
so in recent years, it has become a favorite place to play for area musicians.
It came highly recommended to Scotty Young, our percussionist, guitarist, and
harmonica player, who promptly lined up a gig over there.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While I had passed the place many times a few years ago, on
way to bassist Jody McCall’s own music shack, when I was playing drums with him
and Steve, and Rhonda Robichaux, I never did stop in. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But with our gig lined up for March 16th,, the
prospect of realizing my dream of playing behind a chain link fence seemed
finally within reach…</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
INFLUENCES FOR POSTER</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So this was exciting enough for me and the band, and the
name the Kraken already had taken ahold, and had my imagination pretty well
stirring..</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Tentacles, oozing in and out of the view finder, curling
through holes in rough wood, and lots and lots of beer.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Not to mention, that ZBBG keyboardist Sue Saunders and
bassist Bruce Saunders, both hail from the Buzzard’s Bay/Hyannis area. Sue,
bless her heart, will occaisionally cook for us to sustain us during practice,
and often comes up with some steamy pot of seafood, say muscles (a plate of
which is featured on a <a href="http://speyedrgraphix.blogspot.com/2013/08/zambamboogee-poster-downtown-sounds-of.html">previous ZBBG poster!)</a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So, in desiging the poster, it seemed only appropriate to
build on the legend of the Kraken, and my merritime band-mates’ proud origins,
by incorporating some of this nautical imagery into the poster.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So I began to concoct something in black, sketching out my
ideas on black paper in white conte crayon…</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
BASIC PLAN</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
My plan was a pretty simple poster, 8.5” x 11”, drawn on the
horizontal, a clear departure in every way from my ZBBG’s previous posters
vertical, 11” x 17”. I’m not sure why, I guess I just felt like this event
demanded its own particular feel.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Guess I was thinking straight forward rock poster, with the
tentacle being the main feature. Eventally a horizon/ship suggested itself. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I had a thought to incorporate some of the Kraken bar’s
rough hewn wooden feel in the background also, which (in the end) did come
through a little bit in the sky, which has a scratched, wood grainy kind of
texture. However this is mostly coincidence.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
FEEL</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For the overall feel/tradition that I really wanted to cop
was that of <i>scrimshaw</i><span style="font-style: normal;">, which of course
is the craft of sea faring sailors, whiling away the hours, by carving into
whale teeth, and rubbing India ink into the cut crevices, in much the same
manners as the tattoos of the time (perhaps as a gift for their sweety far
away).</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Thus I also wanted the border to reflect this tradition,
using a pretty rudimentary motif of </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
X’s and O’s, as carved by a sailor’s crude pocket
knife.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This was the essence of the
feel, and I felt pretty sound about it.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A TWIST IN THE LINE UP</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But then fate contributed some interesting additions.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Apparently, local “indierockabilly” legend, Dexter Romweber
called the Kraken, and inquired/offered if he could play the late night set
that evening, an offer which they politely passed on to us. Normally we
probably would have said “F U”, but hey, this was Dexter Romweber, a revered
god of Rockabilly, so we said why not?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So while this was in fact a fortuitous turn of events, to
add Dexter to the bill, this did put a little bit of a twist into things,
because I wasn’t really sure how to incorporate his name into the poster design
I already had. The design I had really necessitated having our name at the top,
to function as part of the water surface. And who was the headliner, and did I
need to consult Dexter?...And how could incorporate Dexter into the larger sea
faring motif?...</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
PRESSURES ON</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While I had gotten a good start on the project well ahead of
time, this little hitch was holding me up a bit, and the show date was starting
to creep up on me.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I also had to locate some scratcher board, not so easy now
that my only source, Studio Supply (RIP) had gone the way of many small,
indipendant businesses in these times. My only resort/hope was the very
Michaels that had probably put them under..</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For better or worse, after much searching, they did have it.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
INSPIRATION TO ‘BREAK ON THROUGH’</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And so one day, with pressure mounting, I left my
landscaping day job early, and went and sat infront of Southern Rail for much
needed beer, and a sit down with this looming, struggling poster concept.
Coincidentally, there was a lot of inspiration to be found there, on the porch
of Southern Rail, which I might have overlooked before, in late night drunken
stipor…. A gorgeous Parisian sign in purple, black and gold. Posters set under
glass of table. Very artful place, really.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And suddenly, turning a long hard look back to my poster, I
realized that I wasn’t doing the poster enough justice, that I needed to up the
ante, and go all out, springing for a whole / completely different format, one
that did ample justice to the ideas that I was working out…</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
NEW FORMAT</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So I sketched out several major revisions on pieces of
notebook paper folded in half on their vertical axis, to give me long, “deep”,
narrow strips.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This tall format served to address a key concept at play in
the poster, perhaps at the core of the Kraken Myth; that the Kraken lurks in,
and emerges from, the inky black DEPTHS of the sea. And the fathoms of this sea
are perhaps proportionally as deep as those of the imagination of a human being
stranded out amid a vastness and power so great and belittling, as to make his
very being q<i>uiver</i><span style="font-style: normal;">!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The more I considered this, the more I comprehended that to
ignore this idea of depth in this inky poster, was not only a missed
opportunity, but <i>heresy</i><span style="font-style: normal;">!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
However, this choice was in many ways risky, because it
meant that I would need to either</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]-->a)<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">
</span><!--[endif]-->shrink the entire thing down to fit this long narrow strip on
the largest piece of scratch board that Micheals could provide (which,
especially considering the task at hand, wasn’t very large at all…), Or.. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]-->b)<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">
</span><!--[endif]-->try to piece together two (or more) pieces, which would have
been tedious to say the least..</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In the end, after much back and forth, I opted for A. which
allowed me to see my whole design at once, rather than imagining the two pieces
as one composition.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The disadvantage of this approach, however, which proved to
be a serious detriment to the execution of the design, was that it was very
difficult to squeeze in the many letters of our long name into this narrow
width. This did cost the quality of our name representation somewhat in the
poster, however I was able to mitigate this to some extent, in photoshop, with
some help from Photoshop Guru, and ZBBG Bassist, Bruce Saunders.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And furthermore, our name was to be clearly printed at the
bottom of the poster, as our website address, where you might say it really
mattered.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
PROCESS</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
LAYOUT</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
First, using a soft leaded pencil, I layed out the
dimensions of the poster on my ‘plank’ of scratcher board (in fact, deviding it
right down the middle, leaving me a “Plan B” on the other, unused, side-
Scratcher Board is a very unforgiving medium).</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I also layed out the center lines (which I always do).</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I then block in with pencil also the general area of poster,
attempting to leave enough space for the various lines of finer point text,
which was somewhat tricky, as I was still writing these as I went!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I then went in with my exacto knife, lightly slicing and
roughing in the images and lettering.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In laying it out, I generally worked my way down from the
top to the bottom. But once I had everything pretty much in place and suggested
in a light scratching, I was able to go back in, and further develop the
various elements, moving around the piece at will, as different sections
attracted/demanded my attention.</div>

water’s wavy edge for the horizon line. But rather late in the game, just in
the knick of time actually, I decided to add it into the distant background.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Adding in a horizon line, of course helped the spatial
believability of the image a lot (this almost always does). This also helped
establish the sense of surface, which of course was crucial to the idea of
depth, which was key as the eye moves down below..</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
The Cherub of Wind (or whatever he is), and the billowing
clouds and sail, had all been part of the original design. However, as I
sketched the redesign, and even well as I scratched into the board, these began
to develop. I organized the clouds in a descending line, which helped to
organize the clutter of this image-full section. And I added some ZZ Top
sunglasses and styling to the Cheeky Cherub, a nod to the Kraken’s biker bar
past.</div>

vertical format)</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The “The Kraken” lettering was a lot of fun.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have always, since a kid, been a fan of those creepy/hoaky
“Swamp Thing” kinds of letters, which are lit from below, lending a feel of
eminent horror (exactly why I’m not sure). My lust for such lettering was
recently given fresh juice by a marvelous book a friend just gave me of ‘custom
lettering’ from the Sixties and Seventies. This fine tradition certainly worked
its way into this poster as well, as seemed well befitting of Dexter Romweber’s
rockabilly mystique.</div>

Of course, I also really had fun rendering the various

One approach I chose in my treatment of these was to leave
some details of the tentacles lost in shadow, which I think adds to the sense
of lurking danger, and over all, I think, proved to be pretty effective.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And I have to say, think I made a fine addition to (actually
a reduction of), lets just say an adaption of, the Kraken’s logo. Studying
their website, I duelly used their craigy ‘stein’, complete with its ‘K‘
emblem. However, I reduced the writhing full-blown Kraken-in-a-Kup, to a more
subdued and subtle single tentacle, hanging over the edge, like a frothy trail
of beer suds, straight from the cask. This touch of subtlety might or might not

“RING IN THE NEW YEAR” POSTER</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For ZamBamBooGee’s performance at the Pittsboro Roadhouse

of 2012, coincidentally, came at that year’s culmination.</div>

just that summer invited us to play for the grand reopening of their new

SPECIAL INVITATION!</div>

But now, via Tommy and the Roadhouse Crew, came another
special opportunity-</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
An invitation to come and play the coveted New Years Eve
party at the Roadhouse.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
No doubt, such a nomination to herald in the New Year at the
newly reformed Pittsboro Roadhouse, with their good, food, staff and guests,
and our fans and music was such a great peach of an honor, that indeed it
certainly warranted a special poster to commemorate the event.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And for such a poster, I had just the idea….</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A SOURCE FOR INSPIRATION</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You see, we our band, ZBBG practices at the home of Bruce
and Sue Saunders, who regularly, graciously open their home to us.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And the halls of this home, indeed the very walls of it, are
‘encrusted’ in the jewels of Bruce Saunders’ making.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Since the 1960’s, Bruce has been creating mandalas that draw
the viewer in, and set them down in a state of inspiration and serenity. Bruce
used to hand draw and color these, and mount them on circular disks of wood,
and sell them on the streets of Berkeley, during the height, and right at the
epicenter of, the Cultural Revolution, which ripped through the West Coast 50
years ago (and has only just now arrived in Siler City…). </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And, as he did some 50 years ago, Bruce still begins these
mandalas by hand. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Yet, now, changing with the times, Bruce has harnessed the
awesome power of the digital, just a twinkle in Steve Job’s eye in the 60’s
(probably around the corner).</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And with this tool, Bruce weaves imagery of every kind into
his mandalas, the likes of which I have never seen. To get a peek, check out <a href="http://www.newearthgallery.com/">www.New Earth Gallery.com</a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As a regular guest at the Saunders’ household, I enjoy the
rare pleasure of getting to watch an ever-moving flow of these images pass
across the walls of their home.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have been enamoured by my, and have really fallen in love
with a few.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
One that really knocked my socks off, you sees on the poster
before you.</div>

I’m not sure exactly when or how the idea came to me.<br />

“RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR”</div>

To me, the image was just so resonant. It seemed to be a
depiction of resonance and vibration itself.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And so it was this artwork that I wanted to use, as an
emblem for that which I thought we could offer to the people of Chatham County-
the chance to ceremoniously ‘Ring in the New Year”. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
OUR LOGO</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Part of the Challenge was getting our logo together.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This had been something that I had been developing for a
long time, really since we first decided on the name Zambamboogee.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I just started playing around with it, on paper, and it
really came almost instantly.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This logo got its very first chance to peek its head out and
shine at UCLACC.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
After our long and cathartic gig there, once our many fans
had filtered on out the door,, Marj placed a heavy black permanent market in my
hand, and invited me to sign our name on the walls of that great institution.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now, at that point in the evening, I thought that I was
pretty well wrung out of creative energy like a sponge. But with some high
spirited encouragement of my bandmates, I stood upon a chair, and proceeded to
lay that logo’s lettering out in its debut to the world. Jah Bless Marj and my
good bandmates, for what was, for me, one of the more glorious moments in my
graffitti career.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So, getting a hand drawn logo up on cinder block is one
thing. Getting it digitized and onto a poster another….</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Stayed up late at Bruce and Sue’s</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Of course, another part of the design process was obtained
all of the up to date information about the event from the Venue, as well as
their logo to use. Nicole and Amber were both great to work with in supplying
me with these.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It was a little bit of a challenge for me to place the
Roadhouse’s round logo in the black poster, as it has a square around it,
particularly as Photoshop is not my native program.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
However, with Bruce’s help, I was able to devise a way to
cover this witeness, which in the end worked even better than I expected.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
BUMPERSTICKER CHILLIN’s</div>

stickers made. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
POSTER AFTERMATH</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Reputedly, this poster was coveted by storeowners such as
Tony Sullivan (of Sullivan’s Music, also on the circle) and (mostly deservedly)
Tommy Edwards, who helped to arrange the gig. I think that it is interesting
that musicians responded so strongly to Bruce’s image. I think I would chalk

the material that musicians work in, the means by which they ply their trade.

Part of what I believe makes this event poster as strong as

For this poster, I began with the template that I had created for Siler City's 3rd Friday Music Series.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As I described in a previous post, the idea of this was to brand the music series with a consistant series of posters that sponsors was want to add their name to the bottom of.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Into this general poster template, I inserted a composite image that ZamBam Bandmate and Photoshop guru Bruce Saunders helped me to create.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After I posted the recent poster for my band, ZamBamBooGee's upcoming performance at Carolina Brewery, I realized that I am delinquent and tardy in posting the slew of other posters that I have had the honor to create for these momentuous events (often working in tandem with artist and ZBBG bassist, Bruce Saunders).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I figure, I had better play catch up!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And what better place to start, than from the start!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The poster you see here I drew up to celebrate a performance occassion that was special to us in ZamBamBooGee on a number of levels.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Iwz3C6-45XOlEsrAWobpzP18zwCDDLG-M9DkNZ4uzVtMXrZYu2CmaPjWRo9EODBQHUjE8L3DPN_Hr_UprESBtClFp6diE44pQ9jdos5uDpJA8aGYSDQ9zsJoIY4acBzHN0LQ1tjkFi6M/s1600/Poster-+ZamBamBooGee+at+Opening+of+Pittsboro+Roadhouse-+Web+Res.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Iwz3C6-45XOlEsrAWobpzP18zwCDDLG-M9DkNZ4uzVtMXrZYu2CmaPjWRo9EODBQHUjE8L3DPN_Hr_UprESBtClFp6diE44pQ9jdos5uDpJA8aGYSDQ9zsJoIY4acBzHN0LQ1tjkFi6M/s320/Poster-+ZamBamBooGee+at+Opening+of+Pittsboro+Roadhouse-+Web+Res.jpg" width="206" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The event was the grand opening of the Pittsboro Roadhouse and General Store, in Pittsboro, NC.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, if you are from Chatham County, or maybe even if you are from another place nearby,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
you will know that this venue has historically been a critical gathering place in Chatham County, for the last say 30 years...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
THE GENERAL STORE CAFE</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To appreciate this poster, it is important to get a little bit of background...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't know the venue's entire history, save that it was once an auto shop of some kind, and then maybe a healthfood store, and then a really sweet cafe and restruant.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What I liked about it was that you could go in and grab a key lime soda on a hot day, but they would also be holding fancy dinners and fundraisers in the back for local nonprofits.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They hosted alot of great bands from the area, and showed a lot of art.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All in all, the space was a major treasured resource for a 'scene' in Chatham County that has been (and still is) rich in community.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tragically, the venue had to close. It seemed that, for all of the richness that their expansion provided, economically, it was just too much for a struggling economy to bear.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When those doors closed, we all felt a cold shudder, realizing we had lost not just a good restruant, but an important connecting point.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fortunately, miraculously, about a year later, a nice family, Greg and Maria, who already ran a catering business (Catering By Design) in nearby Cary, decided to revive the establishment, bringing their own take and style sensebilities to the venue. And their vision was The Pittsboro Roadhouse. While this title was probably puzzling to Chatham county's more rural population, who might consider being on the circle of 'Circle City' to be about as downtown as you can get (and ok, they have a point), I had to admire the flair of this vision (which interior designer, Ricky Lindley played on with relish).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And SO, when ZamBamBooGee, who practices up off of Hwy 87, out towards a REAL roadhouse (UCLACC), was invited by Tommy Edwards to have the honor of performing an innaugrual gig for the opening of the new venue, it was an oppurtunity that we treasured as a band, and that I relished as a poster artist...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
THE MISSION </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
ZamBamBooGee has a gig coming up at a local Brewery (Carolina Brewery), and we needed a poster. So I decided to employ a particular photo that I had taken in Germany last fall, and had been saving for just such an occassion...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
THE INSPIRATION</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqjVWKu_WFKmpjPaLHhDWM-1bG0c4Dq0-N41d1PcFrt22AzX04DIbAIld9FLe43As8lSw7mjXsc8btLXmbePmZLrFWLZ0R8bFy7FTsMqnIN6HL69wyye8ZVmk6mp2RUMwXmnbuzNtqp3Ha/s1600/Sun+Disk+Man+Hole+Cover+Detail,+Germany.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqjVWKu_WFKmpjPaLHhDWM-1bG0c4Dq0-N41d1PcFrt22AzX04DIbAIld9FLe43As8lSw7mjXsc8btLXmbePmZLrFWLZ0R8bFy7FTsMqnIN6HL69wyye8ZVmk6mp2RUMwXmnbuzNtqp3Ha/s320/Sun+Disk+Man+Hole+Cover+Detail,+Germany.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can just feel the life giving warmth pouring off of this manhole cover. And I don't know about you, but for me, just looking at it makes me want to sit in a sunny biergarten, and drain a few tall hefewiesen while simultaneously soaking up the sun...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
THE APPROACH</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Originally, I had planned to use our normal ZamBamBooGee logo, which features a much more flowing style. And I do think that it would have compimented this earthly sun disk very handsomely, enough so that I might have to use them together in a subsequent design...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
However, in the end, for this poster, I decided to stick with a font that was strictly, yet playfully, German in character- what else but "Bauhaus"?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(after all, as I can atTEST from OctoberFEST, it is good to see German's enJoying themselves!) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

And indeed, I had a lot of fun playing with the tight radial curves of this font, most notably the circular motif that its period provided, which harmonzed well with the design of the manhole cover. This became especially fun in placing these dots before and after the "ZamBamBooGee" at the top, playing with the black dot motif that the manhole cover's negative spaces provided. Every ting seemed to be lining up according to plan...Black holes, sun disks, manhole covers...."Zis ees sownding like a bik cosmic ting to me, ja?"</div>

I have been Graphic Designing my ass off, getting ready for the Festival For the Eno.<br />
I've decided that this year, for a change, I will get all of my marketing materials- signage, hangtags, postcards, etc., together on the front side, while there is still plenty of time, instead of as an after thought, when it is kinda too late!<br />
<br />
Maybe I'm just trying to be a better client to myself. I feel quite confident that I will pay myself back for this good behavior in spades!</div>Travishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05798861608251793013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8199723626268015227.post-17937468093355474052012-03-22T20:36:00.001-07:002012-03-22T20:36:43.735-07:00Painting Towers at Piedmont Biofuels<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

<br />
This is WAY late, and out of sequence, BUT, I just remembered that I never did post this one episode (alas there are many that I missed posting..).<br />
<br />
About around a year ago exactly really, my good friend, Our Local Friendly Muralist, Stacye Leanza called me up, and said she had a job for me.<br />
This involved climbing up on some precarious ladders to paint some logos on the watertanks over at the Piedmont Biofuels Plant! This was in preperation for a big conference to occur there, in the next day or so.<br />
<br />
Well, on such short notice and precarious circumstances, we both probably would have told anyone else to shove it, BUT Lyle and Tammy Estill have been so great to Artists (and the community as a whole (through their Abundance Foundation, sponsering for instance, the Pittsboro Community Mural, that Stacye and I worked together on), and bringing all kinds of artists on site, to really funky up the place real nice (including yours truly, who Lyle bought an Atomic Tiresphere from), that we had to give the guy his due, shaky ladders or no.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6LwW_0_YAHFujJWX17E90FfZA_NdxwPOoMoHQ8ogascWaTm34SdoCF6SlmxbnFp7vCtkpqDT7a-kJu1PMPjGYeiRE3kGt71pF0L-yQqq-iFEMDOPpq4r4VClh6Pm4lDg1KYZLCWlUSSWW/s1600/Painting+Tower+at+PBF+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6LwW_0_YAHFujJWX17E90FfZA_NdxwPOoMoHQ8ogascWaTm34SdoCF6SlmxbnFp7vCtkpqDT7a-kJu1PMPjGYeiRE3kGt71pF0L-yQqq-iFEMDOPpq4r4VClh6Pm4lDg1KYZLCWlUSSWW/s320/Painting+Tower+at+PBF+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So, (I think at Stacye's request) I also enlisted the help of Artist Extraordinaire, Alexander McKenzie, who proved to be a great help through out the whole process.<br />
(Unfortunately, as Alex was on ground support, he was the one taking the pictures (thanks Alex), and sadly, we have none of him!:(<br />
<br />
It was real groovy for all of us 3 to be working together again, as Stacye and I both met Alexander on the Pittsboro Mural (Alex painted the wicked Bald Eagle way high up in the dead tree!)<br />
<br />
I know that Stacye really enjoyed working with Alex again too.<br />
<br />

In this days first crack of light, I put some time in on a logo for the Downtown Sounds in Siler City 3rd Friday Music Series.<br />
I think I came up with a pretty good design.<br />
In it, I tried to work a little more on the theme that I had struck upon while designing the <a href="http://speyedrgraphix.blogspot.com/2011/05/investing-in-siler-city.html">"Money spent in Town, Keeps This Town Around" bumper sticker.</a><br />
And that is the idea that a small town is capable of<i> twinkling </i>in a way, maybe, that a larger city can't.<br />
<br />
So I did a little bit of work with 'stars' in this one, using them first in the sky, but then 'reflecting them in the scene below.....<br />
<br />
It is nice working on a logo for an event and a space that I know so well. Because I know that on a 3rd Friday Night in Siler City, this really can happen. The people on the sidewalk, the artwork, with its investments of hours of handwork and love, these all really can glow on a Friday Night in Siler City.<br />
It is something to behold.<br />
So the trick is giving a taste of this enigmatic experience with others, to let them know what they are missing. This is the job, the providence, of an Artist. Am I up to the task? We shall see....<br />
<br />
My thought is that this logo could be used on letterhead business cards, refrigerator magnets, postcards, and perhaps a banner to hang up downtown, or out on the highway, during the lead up week to the monthly event. It could even be used as a letterhead for the Performer's Contract that I am developing for the series, to help give the musicians a sense of excitement, about what it is that they are planning to partake in. In fact, this idea is what really got me rolling on the thing at that ungodly hour this morning!<br />
<br />
Unfortunately I have yet to figure out how to reduce these pdf files down enough to make blogspot happy, so I guess I'll have to wait to post them...</div>Travishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05798861608251793013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8199723626268015227.post-40537323763190176742012-03-20T23:12:00.006-07:002012-03-22T19:53:53.492-07:00Down By The River<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
Today, after a peaceful and accomplished day at work, I made a little pilgrimage </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
to the sacred Haw River, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
to make my first dip of the season. </div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
But arriving there, I was so taken by the stunning vista of the water pouring over the damn, and the mist rising from this pounding wall of water, that I had to double back, over ouchy gravel, for my camera.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I didn’t have a particular brand identity in mind when
drawing the logo, at least not quite consciously; I just started sketching, and
this is what I came up with. I like it though, for a number of reasons.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When we played at UCLACC in February, I was invited by the
owner, who placed a sharpy in my hand, to ceremoniously sign the wall with our
bands name. Of all 10 of our collective hands, how had she know to put in this
one? Thus, for the first time, this logo had its chance to be boldly born
across that wall, 8 parts tactical assault, 2 parts scrawl.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And with our outdoor gig coming up to kick off the DownTown
Sounds In Siler City 3rd Friday Concert Series, and rumors of UNC
TV’s plans to broadcast it, I thought this seemed like an opportunity not to be
missed, for exposure, and just who to do the job than a banner.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
My first step was to transpose/sketch the logo out on the
back of an older banner I had scavenged years ago in Durham. I had since primed
its surface with a light grayish purple, for the purpose of a face painting
banner.<br />

Sketching this logo design flowed very easily. Its funny, I
guess I must have worked out most of its kinks during previous sketches,
because it just flows so naturally from my hand. For me, at least, there is a
very strong sensual component that has been worked out, by the hand, through
the human body. And I wonder of this translates visually to others, as it does
to me…</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Once all of the edges and contours had generally found themselves on the format of the banner, it was time to take the leap, and cut them
in in paint.<br />

</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
To begin, I layed in the black background. I was not
completely commited to an all black background. In future incarnations, I might
like to play with a little more depth and texture, sort of a washed out
tan/sepiaed feel. But for this situation, I was on a tight deadline, and the
black background seemed like the sureset bet.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBQ0jcRyQMuJnfPk5mNgCmva8tpMaWve8sLUPGaGAPkI0KK1vMI34ymR2dU-vCAflaF6PuaLrkfsIHBjwV3VXXIEXkU9RDjyB5Hx7kjWy9bbsJCibsBLjHaI7FflHJy8R1wl76Ze2l5_Vp/s1600/ZamBanner+Background.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBQ0jcRyQMuJnfPk5mNgCmva8tpMaWve8sLUPGaGAPkI0KK1vMI34ymR2dU-vCAflaF6PuaLrkfsIHBjwV3VXXIEXkU9RDjyB5Hx7kjWy9bbsJCibsBLjHaI7FflHJy8R1wl76Ze2l5_Vp/s320/ZamBanner+Background.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
My next move was to paint in the green bamboo. This required
quite a bit of experimentation to achieve the dusky blue/grey/greens of bamboo
culms, while also keeping the fresh lush green hue. Using several different
tones, and colors to lend the pole the feel of roundness, I think I was finally
able to strike a balance of the subtle color characters.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3eMK_JVQ4OwGAsxArZj84jDTjvNQ0rThZYiJIB-HV86QhTS9yveyNfz5xfLB4QN3iUDg9GhTHu-tuim8ssGvWl-4htjq6rUm0WTgdtdlNfS2SrGI3GscFV24Xv4jPEMhpf_6amoJC7j-J/s1600/ZamBamboo+Banner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3eMK_JVQ4OwGAsxArZj84jDTjvNQ0rThZYiJIB-HV86QhTS9yveyNfz5xfLB4QN3iUDg9GhTHu-tuim8ssGvWl-4htjq6rUm0WTgdtdlNfS2SrGI3GscFV24Xv4jPEMhpf_6amoJC7j-J/s320/ZamBamboo+Banner.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
However, my gratifying seeming-virtuosity in giving the bamboo culm its cylinderic depth came back to haunt me later, when I
added the letters on top of it. The varied background became just to busy to
make the lettering very legible.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
My next step was to go ahead and lay in the lettering in
white.<br />
<br />
My final destination color was to be a neon orange that I had pilfered
from a closing Hungates sale (RIP). However, I knew that in order for this
orange to truly sing its siren song, it would need a stage of white to perform
from. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Laying in this white was gratifying, to see the letters take
shape.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiENgOKQG4Ao8RjG9YxggmaAi7Y-5sZjjOLXTZbpeWI5h0EA5YV37KclVFDv3aoyCxZT5hqHShJPhBoX1142bdGCuc5kJWZBl5Mf7KqvSNh1AxOPnxsmNgkodWdJQPfW3hDYtFvDPFJSQNN/s1600/Zambamboo+Banner+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiENgOKQG4Ao8RjG9YxggmaAi7Y-5sZjjOLXTZbpeWI5h0EA5YV37KclVFDv3aoyCxZT5hqHShJPhBoX1142bdGCuc5kJWZBl5Mf7KqvSNh1AxOPnxsmNgkodWdJQPfW3hDYtFvDPFJSQNN/s320/Zambamboo+Banner+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I found that painting white ontop of the black was much more
fulfilling, than its opposite approach of cutting back in on the white, which I
eventually had to do. It was just more difficult to achieve a full and natural
roundness, and grace to the curves, cutting back in this way, perhaps not
surprisingly.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
However, I also found that it can be dangerous to be too
zealous with this white underpainting, particularly ontop of the varied and complex
surface of the bamboo…</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For my next step was to go ahead and lay in this bright
orange color on top of the white. And while it did sing dutifully,<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlGgryKjuuDSZxwl88Zei8VKv8ZL0Zx7Lds7gvv67xlZddpzaQkap9Jk8eOEtdHQ-ZFBr0DseoCHw39k7hrX-jdm5F6jmWoVE4YmaaR4Tpr5qpwU0TwbIiKPP7SU74BNrLD3D8gkGEGYur/s1600/ZamBam+Banner+w:+orange+lettering.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlGgryKjuuDSZxwl88Zei8VKv8ZL0Zx7Lds7gvv67xlZddpzaQkap9Jk8eOEtdHQ-ZFBr0DseoCHw39k7hrX-jdm5F6jmWoVE4YmaaR4Tpr5qpwU0TwbIiKPP7SU74BNrLD3D8gkGEGYur/s320/ZamBam+Banner+w:+orange+lettering.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
every edge
where I shyied back with the orange from too-plump and blustery of a white
underpainted edge, I was left with a screeching white line, that clawed at my
eyes, and my knowledge that I would need to come back in with various shades of
green. And remixing these shades, on such a tight time line was a daunting and
costly mistake.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For the Z, I attempted a similar approach, laying in an
orangy yellow, on which to spread some gold paint. However, after I had painted
a sizable section of the Z with this orange, I discovered that the gold would
not infact shimmer from this platform, but rather shrink into it, and I knew
that I was doomed..for now the bright orange, and strong willed Z was competing
with the neon orange lettering, and disharmony ensued.. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So, with dwindling time on the clock, and juggling all sorts
of band issues, I finally made the decision to return the Z to the light
grayish purple it had incedentaly begun as, realizing that in fact, its subdued
hue was its strength in the balance of the design, tempering the strength of
the Z’s serpentine writhing.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I will continue to develop this banner, and this design. I
might even enlist the superpowers of cohort/Muralist/Colorist extraordinaire,
Stayce Leanza, for her two cents.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As Stacye smartly explained to a fan at the concert last
night, it’s a work in progress, and thus, at every show, she can observe its
transformations.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And knowing Stacye, this things going to get a lot more colorful!<br />
<br />
We did decide the banner, even in its unfinnished state.<br />
The Gig was a BLAST!, and I am glad that we had a name to go with it, perfect or not.<br />
<br />
In fact, a picture of the band made it into the Chatham News, and what was emblazoned right across the background, behind my bodacious bandmates? Da Banner, bearing our bequeethment. bedumdum. Well, that was a well invested(and rewarded) stretch of artistic capital! <br />

I have been developing a poster for Siler City’s 3rd Friday Concert Series.<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
This series features a different Musical Performance Group every 3rd Friday of the month (March thru October). It is organized by Joan Underwood, Co-owner of the Courtyard Cafe, and is planned, hand in hand, with the other art, food and cultural festivities, that we regularly hold down here, as part of our on going revitalization efforts in Historic Downtown Siler City. As locals will attest, this regular celebration has gone a long ways into drawing people back off the highway, back into downtown Siler City, to celebrate and use the downtown as a civic space. And the concert series has been an integral part of that celebration.</div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
However, this important Concert Series’ future has been jeapordized by the loss of its Chatham Arts Grassroots Grant funding (which is feeling increased strains as Nation and consequently NC Arts funding dries up, and more local good causes, addressing various heightened needs, clamor to be fed).</div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Thus to some extent, it seems clear that we must seek other angles and sources of funding, if we are keep the series (and be extension, this entire effort) alive, and rolling. And while I am generally shrewd about my time and involvent, this was writing on the wall that I just can’t ignore. (as a local business owner, a musician, a ‘dancer’, and a romancer, its impossible to watch a good thing just shrivel up and die).</div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
So over the years, I have tried to help Joan find regional talent (Emily Stewart and The Baby Teeth was one great find/score!) I am also trying to help develop a contract for the music series, drawing on my experience as a musician, and contracting graphic design.</div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
So my intention with the poster, was, in essence, to brand, (or rebrand) the music series itself, as its own distinctive entity, somewhat independent from all of the other good activities which surroiund the 3rd Friday Event. It seems that the series is really reaching a point of maturity, where is can act as its own individual draw to downtown Siler City, every 3rd Friday night.</div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Therefor I wanted a consistant format, color scheme etc, that would identify each of the 8 different concerts each year as part of a whole, a series.</div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
To achieve this, I designed a poster with a header, a footer, and borders, leaving the space at the center blank, to feature that month’s Musical Performer- their name, image, and perhaps a brief description.</div>

I knew (from my discussions with Courtyard Café Owner Joan Underwood) that the clear, directness of the, (perhaps somewhat informal) previous title, was important to Joan. It worked- it told people What, When and Where. Hard to beat that really. However, I just felt like it needed a little more pizzaz. As they, to “sell the sizzle, not the steak”. And thus, I sought a comprimise, to retain the 3rd Friday Concert Series, as the ‘sub descriptor’, rather than as the ‘banner’.</div>

For the feel, I wanted to capture something of the essense of Downtown Siler City, with all of its brownstone grandeur. According to Arts Incubator Director (and well traveled Architect) Ann Bass, who has the eye for things, Siler City possesses some notable brickwork and buildings, and this is one of the many facets that makes this downtown special.</div>

Next, I wanted some colors that would compliment those clayey earth tones, and for this I chose first a deep magenta-y purple. I am still narrowing in on this exact color, and also the forms which will wear it. But eventually, I hope to have some proud treble cleff, and staffs, glowering with cool intensity in the back ground of all all that brick.</div>

For the past year, I have been working to expand my offerings as a 'graphic diplomat', into the realm of Photography. This is a medium that I have always enjoyed (particularly in High School and College), I think because it allows for the possibility for spontaneous visual interaction between the artist and with the world around him/her.<br />
<br />
This Saturday, I was presented with a spectacular, if challenging, opportunity, to document the performance of an old Durham friend, Alex Weiss, and his band, A Different Drum, performing at a new Durham venue, "The Old Havana Cafe and Sandwhich Shop", newly opened on E. Main St..<br />
<br />
The ancient building is really exquisite, and so is what they have done with it.<br />
With some really nice accents, like potted palms, wall sconces etc, set among elegent marble, this created a dynamic setting for A Different Drum's Music, which can best be described as an Afro-Latin Chamber Ensemble.<br />
<br />
The challenge of this scene, of course, was that it was a low light situation (at night). And I have not yet really invested in the technical ability's, or equipment to work around this obstacle, without a flash, which I generally detest. <br />
<br />
The main risk, of course, is blurryness, which I could have overcome with a tripod (which I might need to permanently pack in my trunk!).<br />
<br />
What follows are a few shots from the evening. This is not high quality photography, but its a start!<br />

Earlier that day, I had made my way to the Durham Public Library, to witness the first ever public performance of Alex with Columbian Harpist, Pavelito. I am quite proud to say that I had a hand in this devine collaboration, when I discovered Pavelito's music on Nicky and Justin's inspired Muse Productions website. I instantly knew that this would be a good match, and sure enough, no sooner had I pointed Alex his way, they were getting together, and making plans!<br />

I also got to do some video documenting of the event, using Don Bryan's superior equipment.<br />
This is quickly becoming my dharma at many friend's musical performances, which I don't mind at all!<br />
Again, this particular setting provided many rich tableaus in which to view this visually and auraliy dynamic group! One idea is<br />
<br />
Local is Focal<br />
<br />
Then I take that to:<br />
<br />
Local is Folkal<br />
<br />
Folkal Point<br />

Hope to have it up shortly..<br />

<br />
I'll actually start by showing my first stab at this last week.<br />
<br />
While the message of this is pretty direct and overall positive, its catch phrase/tagline at the bottom has a certain solomn weight to it, that I think is interesting...<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM_cd7nEyJ-IUJEelywFvN_N2o6RLwfRJjCUArRYvNSKZX1YzPZUXG6DamHJdGX3GXcEISH1PMcZND9v5_lNxL6m5D7qQpm75IkanRmdq7B27A2N4QhoMK0CQ-6LI2Ti-USlisFI44aQdx/s1600/Support+Locally+Bumper+Sticker.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="108" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM_cd7nEyJ-IUJEelywFvN_N2o6RLwfRJjCUArRYvNSKZX1YzPZUXG6DamHJdGX3GXcEISH1PMcZND9v5_lNxL6m5D7qQpm75IkanRmdq7B27A2N4QhoMK0CQ-6LI2Ti-USlisFI44aQdx/s400/Support+Locally+Bumper+Sticker.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Locally Owned Businesses, Ignore them and they will go away came to me a couple of years ago, when our local copy/print shop closed their doors.<br />
<br />
As someone who depended on their services quite a bit, this loss of such a business downtown shook me pretty hard, and that is the phrase that popped out of my mouth.<br />
<br />
How could we have let this happen? I thought.<br />
<br />
Is this too morbid, to scary, to put on a bumper sticker?<br />
I think not.<br />
Siler City is a town I think, that can handle a little bit of grit in its grits...<br />
And I don't think there is much sense in sugar coating the truth.<br />
<br />
Perhaps I should deck this one out with a grim reaper?<br />
<br />
Well, while I still feel the very same way, while I was working on yet Another sticker, an alternate of of saying this same idea arose...and I kind of like it..<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO3krhDUPP9keCOSOGu867EtaAZCmcjM_8wYNd9Ad-qmJYwIBRuZo-ZHIiLemSxRnMUoSf5UyTWlTkNSm-ISX2EGMXQnf_-MPT_Zz4nTBLzfd4G9uEt0oV11VTgqnNNa_Bib4DC9Lpz8lo/s1600/Money+Spent+In+Town+bumper+sticker-+color+.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="108" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO3krhDUPP9keCOSOGu867EtaAZCmcjM_8wYNd9Ad-qmJYwIBRuZo-ZHIiLemSxRnMUoSf5UyTWlTkNSm-ISX2EGMXQnf_-MPT_Zz4nTBLzfd4G9uEt0oV11VTgqnNNa_Bib4DC9Lpz8lo/s400/Money+Spent+In+Town+bumper+sticker-+color+.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This is still a work in progress, and there are a few things I'd like to change already (like, yes, the green lettering on the bottom). But I do like the general direction it is headed in...<br />
<br />
What I am trying encapsulate in the design, I think, is the preciousness of a viable downtown.<br />
It doesn't have to be fricken Broadway. And I wouldn't want it to be. But I think you do want a downtown t to be at least quietly vibrant. Actually, what I think a small town should aim for is to positively "Twinkle"!<br />
<br />
Its funny, I just threw that star in there as an afterthought, but now I know what it is doing there...<br />
<br />
</div>Travishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05798861608251793013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8199723626268015227.post-77367876653527692042011-05-30T16:59:00.000-07:002011-06-01T06:28:18.833-07:00"I INVESTED IN SILER CITY" stickers<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">In getting involved with the NC STEP Leadership Team, and directing my efforts towards/through the Business Development Strategies Group, I have been thinking a bit about the important role that Graphic Design can play (has played and will continue to play) in catalysing small business growth and activity in town. The more I think about it, the more I realize the potential of its impact... (as in many ways, Siler City's is perhaps largely an image challenge..).<br />
<br />
So, while ultimately, I think that street side signage is going to be a huge player in Siler City's continued development, for the past couple weeks, I have been turning my attention (improbably) towards.....Stickers!<br />
<br />
Yes, stickers. Why? Because they are, well, so sticky, silly.<br />
<br />
One set of stickers I have been working on creating are stickers that reward shoppers for choosing to shop in Siler City. Obviously, leaking dollars outside of the County is a huge obstacle to a healthy local economy. While tackling this problem will be an ongoing effort for Siler City (as it is in all small towns), and there need to be a variety of approaches to this problem, perhaps the simplest and most direct approach is to remind people of the importance of shopping locally.<br />
<br />
And of course, we must reward shoppers, when they do make that choice, to support our local businesses.<br />
<br />
One way might be through this simple sticker.<br />
<br />
This one looks like it was designed by the Board Of Elections. Hey, got to start somewhere!..<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7tyNsbwwWvKbhwjeO1mun1xibueO-gDLz0ETsjJcBCSZyBZciW6zpwuz09lmBRH3IpQ-lbz3gj8Fuo_sD2rmZ9JPy9Mfwye2oF70RIrovACFA_uKP7hJuyYM_DXVp1w3y3Eusw03rkyxj/s1600/I+Invested+In+Siler+City+Today+sticker+redwhiteblue.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7tyNsbwwWvKbhwjeO1mun1xibueO-gDLz0ETsjJcBCSZyBZciW6zpwuz09lmBRH3IpQ-lbz3gj8Fuo_sD2rmZ9JPy9Mfwye2oF70RIrovACFA_uKP7hJuyYM_DXVp1w3y3Eusw03rkyxj/s1600/I+Invested+In+Siler+City+Today+sticker+redwhiteblue.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">Actually though, I suppose that is quite appropriate. </div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">After all, they know better than anyone, that a small badge of honor, for doing your good duty, can go a pretty long ways in developing pride...</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Of course, I thought if I wanted anyone to actually VALUE this small token of appreciation, I had better HOIST it out of the early Gerald Ford 70's!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Perhaps I can develop a few designs that business owners can choose from, or they can design their own...<br />
<br />
Here it is with a bit more color (and life!) Its getting there! (though from afar, I can see that the black ring (that I really like) is still overbearing it).<br />

</div>I'll say it again.<br />
<br />
AWOOOOOOOO!!!!!<br />
<br />
My very good friend Matus is really passionate about brewing beer.<br />
He loves it!<br />
<br />
For the past year or so, he has been attempting to (and succeeding at!) starting a CSB- Community Supported Brewery!<br />
<br />
YES!<br />
<br />
And to protect his investment in some worthy vessels for his love brews, he has enlisted the help of yours truly, to design a talisman, to ward of pandering poachers of these bottles! In return, he has offered me two season's shares in his CSB!<br />
<br />
Double YES!<br />
<br />
What that means is that he or a little mouse name Cat, drop a big hulking growler of beer off at my door step every week for a couple months! A different delicious flavor every week!<br />
Now I'm not a real big drinker..but how much fun is that? I just set the washed jugs back out on the step once I've drained them down my gullet, and they come pick them up, just like the MilkMan! Pretty cool!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>So, down to business. Matus and I set up a few meetings.<br />
<br />
I started with a much more complex idea.<br />
<br />
Eventually though, I managed to distill (npi) this down to its most important essense.<br />
<br />
I just wanted to get this one up there in the blog. I'll come back later to do this project more justice in description.<br />

<br />
<br />
Here is a poster that I just finished designing for an upcoming double/triple bill event.<br />
<br />
The event is a sort of Chatham County partnership of two or three events (actually many more!)..<br />
<br />
(and therefor, be warned that this post is very much about the theme of Siler City, and Chatham County in general, and our 'creative economy', as much as it is about this poster! It also touches on the issue of contracting, which happens to have been a big theme for me this month).<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The two main events are:</span><br />
<br />
1) The Downtown Siler City 3rd Friday Artwalk, which has been a staple of downtown business's efforts to revitalize the downtown here, and<br />
<br />
2) The Chatham Creative Economy Summit, which will feature a keynote address by our NC Secretary of Cultural Resources, Linda Carlisle. taking place up the road, in Silk Hope, NC While the 'Pre-Party' is sort of our 3rd Friday event in Siler, there will also be a Post Party in nearby Pittsboro, NC. The 3 pronged approach seems to be the love child of local Publicity Genius, Carol Hewitt.<br />
<br />
I should share that my <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">primary goal</span> in the design and contracting of this poster was:<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"> the advertisement of our 3rd Friday event.</span><br />
<br />
Why was this?<br />
Well, in general, we have had a very good response to these events, both locally, within Siler City, and regionally, from Surrounding towns like Sanford, Silk Hope, Liberty and Pittsboro. In Siler City especially, people have really 'come out of the woodwork', and I think its pretty safe to say that you will see the downtown a blaze with more people, and civic fervor than you will ever see on most of the other 28+ days of the month. In this way, the event has been really successful.<br />
However, attendance of this event can flucuate wildly, often in response to the weather. And ironically, in February, we had PERFECT weather, and a very poor turn out. The only people I saw walking around were out of towners, wondering where the heck the party was at?<br />
<br />
So needless to say, when we learned that the organizers of the larger Chatham County Creative Economy Summit was showcasing our 3rd Friday event, it was with some alarm, and urgency that this downtown community called ourselves to ACTION!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq9_5Qw2llde5o5dpWubIQKvYLKGB6s3CrTj_n2JmOviVt0WvQAtHBZrc4BPpaLFJqg2sqaEk8wjT2pX4Eu_b-m7chtiemOwBYl-JUynp-Sr9q8zC0WpjEb2gYXnz7XZGBE_2f-G6xa6Mf/s1600/3rd+Friday+-+CCES+Poster.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq9_5Qw2llde5o5dpWubIQKvYLKGB6s3CrTj_n2JmOviVt0WvQAtHBZrc4BPpaLFJqg2sqaEk8wjT2pX4Eu_b-m7chtiemOwBYl-JUynp-Sr9q8zC0WpjEb2gYXnz7XZGBE_2f-G6xa6Mf/s200/3rd+Friday+-+CCES+Poster.jpg" width="128" /></a></div><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">ANTE UP</span><br />
So one evening, the downtown merchants called a meeting, and we gathered at the local Courtyard Cafe coffee shop (ground zero of grassroots SC revitalization efforts) and called on all of our own best personal resources to help make sure this was a memorable event, worthy of its time! I personally felt very honored to be invited. And it was encouraging and exciting to see that everyone in attendance understood the gravity of the situation, and was prepared to chip in in response!<br />
For instance<br />
<br />
-One local artist, who paints beautiful designs volunteered to do face painting on children!<br />
<br />
-The owner of the local used Book Store decided to showcase Holistic Medicine for Pets!<br />
<br />
-I offered to instal Tyrius, the giant tire worm. in a shady nook by a bank. (see my <a href="http://www.reptire.blogspot.com/">reptire</a> blog)<br />
<br />
-The Persons offered up the masks they have been making with a local group of disabled artists, for a Mardi Gras Party!<br />
<br />
-And to address <i>the dire need</i> for downtown dining options ( that we have come to recognize now that we are without Mina Beana's RIP, and Sidewalk is no longer participating, our Local Farmer's Market has offered to prepare a 'Farm to Fork' all locally grown dinner! Which our local outlandsih Artist Roger Person has offered to host in the state of the art Person to Person gallery he built!<br />
<br />
(this is just <i>a small sampling</i> of the different things that our hodge podge of local businesses, reached into their 'pockets', and dropped into this stone soup).<br />
<br />
Well, when we decided that we needed a poster, they all looked around and asked, do we have any graphic designers in town?.... this was to be a little bit of a moment of truth for yours truly..... I probably sort of scowled, while a few eyed me suspiciously. I happen to have got way to many contracts (sculptural and graphic) already to take on volunteer work right now. However, after alot of 'hemming and hawing', finally, the damn broke, and I cried "Alright, Alright!" and had to ante up!<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"> </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">CONTRACT</span><br />
BUT, I did <i>insist</i> that I would not do <i>A THING</i> without a contract. And what a favor I did us all, I believe. I have to thank both myself for this forsight, and also Joan Underwood, good owner of the Courtyard Cafe, for being so cooperative and understanding in agreeing to work with me on this. (It so happens that Joan used to run a landscaping and surveying business with her husband Charles (who agreed to do the printing), so she was well aware of the necessity of contracts in the 'service industry', and I really did appreciate her empathy and great attitude in this regard. She has been a real 'peach' to work with. I wish everyone understood the importance of this process as well as she, and I find that it is becoming part of my job to educate people about this process, and how it can be worthwhile, and even as enjoyable as it has been undertaking this process with Joan. It actually lets both parties breath alot easier, I think I am going to need to follow up with another post just about contracting).<br />
<br />
So, Joan and I contracted to design a poster, with the goal to help HERALD this event, mainly to Siler City.<br />
Now that we had established that we were going to undertake this process together, in an intentional, and somewhat methodical manner, now came <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">THE REALLY FUN PART!!!</span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">What ingredients</span> did we want to put into the poster<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">?</span><br />
<br />
Well, Firstly, one theme, that I sensed emerging during the course of our meeting that night, (and had taken it upon myself to verbally share and acknowledge) was the theme of SPRING. Kim, sitting next to me, hadconfirmed that our date of March 18th was actually quite auspiscous (the New Moon?), and the whole tone of the meeting just seemed to have the flavor of us bugs, hiding under the leaf mat and melting snow, and saying, "Well are we going to stay under here all year?!! Its time to get out of here, into the light of day!!!!"<br />
<br />
So <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: lime;">SPRING</span></span>, which is very much in the air around here at this moment, was to be a <b>central theme</b>.<br />
For this Reason, I put the date loud and clear up top, in a centered (to me almost ceremonial format). For this same reason, I also wanted to choose a color palette that reflected the freshness of spring, a joy to 'behold'.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq9_5Qw2llde5o5dpWubIQKvYLKGB6s3CrTj_n2JmOviVt0WvQAtHBZrc4BPpaLFJqg2sqaEk8wjT2pX4Eu_b-m7chtiemOwBYl-JUynp-Sr9q8zC0WpjEb2gYXnz7XZGBE_2f-G6xa6Mf/s1600/3rd+Friday+-+CCES+Poster.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq9_5Qw2llde5o5dpWubIQKvYLKGB6s3CrTj_n2JmOviVt0WvQAtHBZrc4BPpaLFJqg2sqaEk8wjT2pX4Eu_b-m7chtiemOwBYl-JUynp-Sr9q8zC0WpjEb2gYXnz7XZGBE_2f-G6xa6Mf/s400/3rd+Friday+-+CCES+Poster.jpg" width="258" /></a><br />
Secondly, someone, I believe it was fiber Artist Sue Szary, owner of Against His Will Gallery, pointed out, wouldn't it be wonderful to incorporate the design of the striking and inspiring<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"> new banners</span> that the <a href="http://www.silercitymerchantsassociation.com/">Siler City Merchants Association</a> has hung around town. The read Discover Downtown Siler City, in <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #38761d;">white lettering on a dark green background</span></span>, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #38761d;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #ffd966;">with a central medallion of a 'hand painted' golden yellow sun at the center, very handsome. </span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #ffd966;"><br />
</span><br />
To see an image of these bold and proud flags on the SCMA website, <a href="http://www.silercitymerchantsassociation.com/SCMAprojects.html">click here</a>.<br />
<br />
I thought this was a great idea. And then, a few days later, during a meeting with the planners of the Creative Ecomony Summit (which I had raced back to SC to squeez in and attend), I had another idea of a Riff on that theme...<br />
<br />
The local downtown merchants have come up with this great system of posting a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #ffd966;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #999999;">yellow</span></span> flag outside their business, to signify that they are open for business, and participating. I don't know if this is a common technique that they are appropriated from elsewhere, but around here, it has become somewhat of a <i>signature</i> of the Downtown Siler City 3rd Friday events. So I thought, well why don't we make the flames of this sun (from the banners) into the yellow flags of Downtown business! I personally am quite proud of the poetry of this imagery. This is why you hire a pro!!!<br />
<br />
And then, to top it all off, and to tie it is with the theme of the larger Creative Economy Summit, I added the 'stem' of a light bulb to the sun, making it a light, and added the text<br />
<br />
!LIGHTS ON! Downtown Siler City.<br />
<br />
This 'medallion' was to be the central (hopefully captivating) image of the poster.<br />
The bottom third I decided to keep for information. There was some discussion of making more room for the information, (as there was alot to share). However, I personally really felt it was important to let this image sort of speak, for itself in a way. As we all know, we are all too bombared with information, and I believe that, as we are visual creatures first and for most; if we don't let a piece of marketing do its job of <i>introducing itself,</i> earning the viewers trust, and interest, drawing them in, then all of the the vital information is going to be ignored, and thus lost, rendering the material more or less a useless waste of time and money. That is just my current perspective).<br />
<br />
So, for this poster, I kept the central message of Lights on Downtown Siler City, <b>clear bold and to the point</b>.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq9_5Qw2llde5o5dpWubIQKvYLKGB6s3CrTj_n2JmOviVt0WvQAtHBZrc4BPpaLFJqg2sqaEk8wjT2pX4Eu_b-m7chtiemOwBYl-JUynp-Sr9q8zC0WpjEb2gYXnz7XZGBE_2f-G6xa6Mf/s1600/3rd+Friday+-+CCES+Poster.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq9_5Qw2llde5o5dpWubIQKvYLKGB6s3CrTj_n2JmOviVt0WvQAtHBZrc4BPpaLFJqg2sqaEk8wjT2pX4Eu_b-m7chtiemOwBYl-JUynp-Sr9q8zC0WpjEb2gYXnz7XZGBE_2f-G6xa6Mf/s400/3rd+Friday+-+CCES+Poster.jpg" width="258" /></a><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq9_5Qw2llde5o5dpWubIQKvYLKGB6s3CrTj_n2JmOviVt0WvQAtHBZrc4BPpaLFJqg2sqaEk8wjT2pX4Eu_b-m7chtiemOwBYl-JUynp-Sr9q8zC0WpjEb2gYXnz7XZGBE_2f-G6xa6Mf/s1600/3rd+Friday+-+CCES+Poster.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a>For the bottom 3rd of the poster, in presenting the information in clear way, I attempted to also keep the feeling of both SPRING and of 'ART'. I had alot of fun cultivating this look too! (a long process).<br />
<br />
I thought of daffodils, of soft mossy green shoulders, and of the slime in the pond I stole some tadpoles from about this time, last year!<br />
<br />
At first, I had all of the info panels white, but this was just killing me to look at, so I changed at least the two side panels to a light buttery mossy green, and this softened the needlessly harsh effect of the white a little.<br />
<br />
I left the central panel white, for two reasons.<br />
<br />
For one, my photoshops chops are not yet up to par, and I wasn't able to retain she shadows of the red door graphic while trying to clip the white out. On a longer timeline, I would have found a way.<br />
<br />
Two: But I was on a tight deadline, and I really liked the way that the door reads in the panel. I am especially pleased by the its position in the panel, and the way it worked out with the text, as to me if feels very 3d, and inviting, set further back towards the horizon. (I had placed it closer to the bottom originally).<br />
<br />
This Red Door graphic, opening onto a sampling of the cultural riches of Chatham county, by the way, was adapted and graciously shared with me by its creator Lesley Landis, of Lesley Landis Designs, who I got to meet (over email) and work with just a little bit in the course of this project, and for whose assistance in sharing this her band of other supporting logos, I am grateful).<br />
<br />
As for the panels, I also felt that it was good that they alternated and varied in tone and hue, to create some more dynamic visual interest in that section of the poster. I felt that also didn't hurt that the summit jumped out (as it is in several ways the centerpiece of the weekend), and also of course that the small amount of white, tied in, and perhaps grounded the white lettering of the text up above.<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">What a balancing act!</span><br />
To me, most of graphic design is just that. A great big balancing act, of different elements, different players, and of all of their/(our!) different needs.<br />
<br />
I do hope that I have met those many needs in this poster.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This one was tricky because in the photograph, the art work was slightly tilted to the right. So I had to tilt the photograph on the postcard to the left, so that the central elements in the collage lined up down the line. This was kind of a pain in the butt (I had to create various shapes to hide the missing corners), but I think well worth it (I can be pretty obsessive about my centerlines, but on this piece it was essential).<br />
<br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I have to admit that I might like this one even more than the last one. The circle seems to balance itself well. Also, I picked a kind of offwhite/eggshell colored glossy card-stock paper to print it on, and this really sort of hums with the white of the lily petal, giving the entire postcard a slightly antique feel which I feel works supremely with the nature of the show, at this creaky and opulent old mansion/museum.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I feel very satisfied with this card, and worked very hard for it with a local printer. They mostly do sort of old fashioned offset printing, but inquiring, I discovered that they do digital as well. Somehow I got it in my head that they could work from Illustrator, which seemed suprising, and indeed it turned out that they don't! So the poor woman worked VERY VERY hard with me to REBUILD the entire postcard in Publisher. It was an arduous process for us both, which pushed us both to our limits, but in the end, we both pushed through, and came out with a postcard that I think we are both proud of. And local artists have been telling me "wow, I didn't know they do printing like that!" So hopefully it will be worth all that hard work for them, and knickpicking on my part (they were very patient and understanding). I feel fortunate to have established this relationship with them, and am looking forward to working with them more in the future. </div>Travishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05798861608251793013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8199723626268015227.post-61967783750469028232010-12-07T16:54:00.000-08:002010-12-07T17:26:10.786-08:00POSTCARD DESIGN FOR SPIRITUAL VISIONS EXHIBITION<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here is a postcard that I have recently been designing for an upcoming Exhibition I will be showing my sculpture in, at Hermitage Museum in Norfolk, VA. The Museum's Publicity Director, and the Executive Director, were both very cool about allowing my to produce my own materials to help publicize the show; and more to the point, my involvement in it, which I appreciated very much. They were even kind enough to lend me the use of their logo (which I used on the back), and they were very encouraging in general. They have been great to work with.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPPRfW-7elO8dPQIpYzaro7rU92vvIMBfbVqcHle4lAv7HY8Bcu3SW93wodTPdSkePVOjKgO6qvUvjJZUy-rUuoEzPe9CeOQFjzIfbWqgPPipgE6f0C9ZzHpUuOsxE6wrMd8-TF0lXCq5s/s1600/SV+postcard+WOI+Ps3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPPRfW-7elO8dPQIpYzaro7rU92vvIMBfbVqcHle4lAv7HY8Bcu3SW93wodTPdSkePVOjKgO6qvUvjJZUy-rUuoEzPe9CeOQFjzIfbWqgPPipgE6f0C9ZzHpUuOsxE6wrMd8-TF0lXCq5s/s640/SV+postcard+WOI+Ps3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here is the BACK of the postcard. You can click on the image for an enlarged view (to read the text at the bottom)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Sorry about the size, blogger's scrollific format does not permit much in the way of width...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje-qEZmjHbdl7feYewGbHWR-JjH6WZnEnh8Ct5IMNvDcvfLb2PG_CEGqpeJ1830ujimF4fIkvgCOSVZFmjKDlq-uHhHpV0OEl7VvU0jbIIEr8UcuRYVxxvZSmg4ZdhVF09BWp0o1aM9Xbp/s1600/SV+postcard+for+blog+BACK.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje-qEZmjHbdl7feYewGbHWR-JjH6WZnEnh8Ct5IMNvDcvfLb2PG_CEGqpeJ1830ujimF4fIkvgCOSVZFmjKDlq-uHhHpV0OEl7VvU0jbIIEr8UcuRYVxxvZSmg4ZdhVF09BWp0o1aM9Xbp/s400/SV+postcard+for+blog+BACK.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So, whadya think? For this design, I had to walk a fine fine line, between the sacred and the sacrosanct, trying to 'toot my own horn', while still keeping with the tone of the show. I hope that I have acheived this.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> To this aim, I made lots of use of the center points. Invisible to the eye, this thing is loaded green to the gills with guide lines. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> And then, there is also that abberition...I felt a little bit corney at first, putting this in, but I needed a line to devide the back of the postcard (!), and it just sort of appeared....woooOOO!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I like it, he's the show's own Casper the friendly ghost, and he's welcome in my postcard anytime. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Most of all, I'm glad I got to make a postcard featuring that image. I have a few particular friends wall that this postcard is aimed for like a remember-me seeking missile.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> It is also a pretty neat (ok REALLY NEAT) show, and I am proud to get to make a postcard for it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I wish that I had thought to offer my services to the other artists in the show. Would be fun to see what they came up with...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Little Piggy goes to Print Shop tomorrow morning at the crack of dawn..</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">I just finished this illustrative logo graphic, meant for a brochure cover, and maybe a tshirt.</div><div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">QUICK COMMISSION</div></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I ran into a friend of mine Mary Helen, two days ago at a coffee shop. She was working on a graphic for her daughter-in-law, who is starting a summer camp with the name 'Ever Wonder' (?) (question mark subtly implied!). I liked the concept of the name, and MaryHelen, had made a really good start illustrating this complex concept- had come up with the concept of the illustrative question mark to explore/represent the idea of wonder. She had also already come up with most of of the elements in the design, such as the earth, the musical notation, the rocket, the flag, and the fish. But she was feeling stuck, and was suffering under the pressure of the impending deadline (the next day!)- an experience I am no stranger to. So when I ran into her at the coffee shop on Saturday afternoon, and she showed me her project I offered to take a stab at it. I can't resist a logo design problem. While I was crazy busy at the time, she asked me what it would be worth. Since I needed the money, and she was willing to pay me what I asked, in order to get it done, and off her hands, I agreed to take it, due 2 days later. We talked about some ideas, and 2 days later, this is what I came up with:</div><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSDVoRhcTIjJaLCkYkLMbH3UM-wJrHDZVLn7Ed4xsBI9IIHmBUS-7zdDoHAMU9npFIHOLL0D8X0ihzHyBvCxZAp10w8uo0ZiEXMEOeo4FAjPkDwXduh3W7h4wHZTCCEZTYF9rsucJwQJcI/s1600/EVER+WONDER+LOGO.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSDVoRhcTIjJaLCkYkLMbH3UM-wJrHDZVLn7Ed4xsBI9IIHmBUS-7zdDoHAMU9npFIHOLL0D8X0ihzHyBvCxZAp10w8uo0ZiEXMEOeo4FAjPkDwXduh3W7h4wHZTCCEZTYF9rsucJwQJcI/s400/EVER+WONDER+LOGO.jpg" width="302" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<div><div><br />
</div><div>Again most of the content and the concept is hers. While I like a lot of content that she brought, my absolute favorite thing that she brought to the design (besides the concept it self), is that fish at the end of the question mark! What an exlamation point, a perfect ending! He seems to be saying, "OK that was fun, but I want to go home now!"</div></div><div><br />
</div><div><b>What I brought to the design was:</b></div><div>- a few new elements (the hand/blossom, the jelly fish, the frog, the pipes, the bicyclist, and the book),</div><div>- some flow (hopefully- to the question mark)</div><div>- the text - lay out and font. (they had it scattered about in the upper portion)</div><div><br />
</div><div>I also introduced an elaboration on the question mark/Ever Wonder concept. By turning the dot of the question mark into a magnifying glass, and also another question mark, who's dot in turn becomes the same, I am attempting to allude to the idea of "ever wonder". I think it is a subtle approach to a subtle concept. You'll have to tell me if you think it is successful.</div><div><br />
</div><div><b>FUTURE</b></div><div>While all the text they wanted at this point was the name Ever Wonder, I thought that in the future, they/we could place bits of descriptive text below the EVER WONDER, in line with, and in proportion to, the smaller magnifying glasses below.</div><div><br />
</div><div>Also, it would be fun to try this in colored media, maybe watercolor pencils, and also maybe in/on scratcher board. I would love to try painting the question mark in a large single stroke in India Ink on clay board, and then going back in and scratching out the details of those forms. Particularly the Jelly fish, who I think gets a little lost with the pencil, but would come out beautifully in scratcher board.</div><div><br />
</div><div>This was a fun project, and I am quite pleased with how this turned out in the end (considering the narrow time constraint), and I think MaryHelen is as well. I hope that her daughter in law, the owner of the business, will be also.<br />
I hope they will ask me to take another stab it it some day, as I feel like there is much more that could be done with this great idea. (design flows so much easier when you have a rich concept to start with, few people understand this).</div><div><br />
</div><div>Please let me know what you think! (I have a thick skin when it comes to drawing).<br />
<br />

Pretty Awesome!!! Got to love it!<br />

PSS Wow, you know it really is a pretty amazing sensation to see some of your work fleshed out in this way, taken to another level, and put to a use far beyond my own scope....wow.<br />
I think this is a new one for me...</div></div>Travishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05798861608251793013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8199723626268015227.post-48644488841216289232010-09-06T10:39:00.000-07:002011-01-11T20:49:43.241-08:00Siler City Farmers' Market- Illlustrative Logo Graphic<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div>This is an illustrative logo/graphic I created for the Farmers' Market, here in Siler City. Founder and seller Joan Thompson approached me about the project a few years ago and about a year and many sketches, meetings, studies, and scratches later, this is what I came up with. The concept hopefully is self evident, and if not, is hopefully pretty well summed up by the tags lines we created to accompany the design in print: "from our fields to your table", or "we bring good food straight to your table".</div><div><br />
</div><div> I designed the piece for, and executed it in, Scratcher board, which is a masonite board, coated with a thin layer of white kaolin clay, and then another layer of black india ink, which you scratch through, to 'exhume' the white below it. And let me tell you, I was ready to scratch my eyes out before thing thing was through! I have never undertaken such an involved project in scratcher board before, and this is probably one of the tighter drawings I have ever undertaken period. But a few details aside (I need to move the pumpkin to the left, and several of the vegetable are out of proportion), I am generally pretty pleased with the overall delivery of the concept.</div><div><br />
</div><div>And it was actually a really fun project to do. I happened to be working for the Cencus Bureau at the time, and this work took me out into the surrounding farmlands a lot, (and intoduced me to several dairy and poultry farmers), which became a source for a lot of the imagery and inpiration for the project (though most of it is infact from my minds eye, save for a few vegetable still lifes, and a few googled reference images). Siler City has a strong and rich poultry tradition, which lasts to this day (though it is finally dwindling), so this is the reason that I chose to include the hen and the rooster in the design.</div><div>When creating a scene, it is always fun to see elements wander in, and find their places (roost?) in the composition. Hopefully these fowl earn their place on this farm by laying a few eggs- helping to tell a little bit of Siler City's story, agricultural, and otherwise.</div><div>Also, it was quite gratifying to get to bear witness to this scene taking shape before me, during the final lino-cutting phase. To watch this scene being progressively lit up, a scratch at a time, by the rays of an Xacto knife sun, was much akin to the experience of the awakening, glowing twilight hours depicted in the drawing. </div><div><br />
</div><div>The sun, cracked across the edge of the sky, breaks and oozes into the cool dark expanse of night, leaking in its light. A burner clicks, and soon all begins, to sizzle and hiss.<br />
<br />
I would say my favorite part of this image is the clouds floating, boyantly, beneath the tents dark canopy. Somehow, this image really satisfies me. It was also fun to watch the sun exploding through the tree in the front yard, and through the barn's hay door, perhaps harkening back to a brief stint working on a cattle farm in college. The chicken and the pumpkin were a lot of fun too.</div><div><br />
<br />
USE/S:<br />
I hope the gang down at the farmers market is able to get a lot of milage out of this image (as, of course, they are a lot of its inspiration also). It is meant for a brochure, newspaper ads, and a couple of banners. Hopefully we can also get it printed on some black canvas tote bags some day (though I am afraid alot of the detail could be lost in a screen print, but thats ok).<br />
Below is a digital version of the image that photographer Duane Hall had created for a newspaper ad. I had intentionally left the area below the table blank, so that the Farmer's Market could fill in time and date info as needed. While I would like to go in with Illustrator, and shift that darn pumpkin of mine over, so that the text could be better centered, I do like what Duane did with what he had, particularly the way he made the lettering at the bottom glow, reflecting what I was trying to achieve up top.<br />
Hope you like it. Please let me know what you think!<br />
Best, Travis<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ43NVubU7APFYrCmMGRLxRIFWtJu2C5INVAoIzIOFoKDD4IJ1XBqomsVbtO0QxiBVan2Ipyzd9qFIKcHXfjbiZEEhULDyPH12jNfUnZMO5YjjSNtRBxwuF9rROjaEyMx2BPHjyb_E5Cqc/s1600/Middle+Earth.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"></a>This Spring, I was entrusted with what I consider to be quite a high honor in my small world: to paint some signs for the Shakori Hills Grassroots festival.<br />
<div>This was quite a thrill for me, especially as I got to meet and paint alongside the creator of some of my favorite signs, that I have have found my self drooling over, over the past few years. </div><div><br />
</div><div>Here is Asheville Artist Leslie, working on a very involved sculptural sign she was making for the festival, similar to the one she crafted for the entrance gate. This woman has a lot of persistance and patience. (each leaf was hand cut with a jig saw).</div><div style="text-align: right;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: right;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMG5WW0MiJH7DiacLAcfU7ZGWNb4ROTbAk-abOI3n6v3Y8iok6lYzoZZZt_gnnFJztXEsr8i3G_eYyOZ7cRqZH6_zm90LvQBrRJRs3aTNqHG2e63onSmdehPZoKp2eCH-k5p0H_1Wkb_ks/s1600/Leslie+Painting.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472459926466447058" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMG5WW0MiJH7DiacLAcfU7ZGWNb4ROTbAk-abOI3n6v3Y8iok6lYzoZZZt_gnnFJztXEsr8i3G_eYyOZ7cRqZH6_zm90LvQBrRJRs3aTNqHG2e63onSmdehPZoKp2eCH-k5p0H_1Wkb_ks/s400/Leslie+Painting.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; height: 300px; width: 400px;" /></a></div><div><br />
</div><div><br />
</div><div></div><div>I have to admit, it was a little bit intimadating working in the midst of a master. However, luckily, Leslie seemed to appreciate having some assistance in her sign making duties, and taking a chance on me, she doled out a few dutiful assignments: she handed me a list of various campgrounds, that needed signs to identify them. She also supplied me with a few blank sign boards on stakes, and some odd cans of paint, and pretty well left me to my own devices..</div><div><br />
</div><div>Deciding to take inspiration, rather than intimadation, from Leslie's awesome mixed media signs, I chose one called Old Homestead, and decided to try to hunt up some local rustic from around the farm...</div><div>First I found myself a good and weathered piece of old plywood, which a friendly fellow with some power tools kindly kut down to shape for me. I found some scraps of cedar that he had been karving away, and karted them away, back to our sign shack, and it was ON.</div><div><br />
</div><div>From the buckets of paint that Leslie directed me to, I chose a palette of earthy ochers. I first used a ruler I had brought along to measure and lay it all out (and this seemed this scored a few points with Leslie). Then I sketched out the letter, and layed in the paints. I tried to use the color and texture of the wood as an 'out line' color between the rusty red and greyish blue, but a lot of this tone was darkened beyond good effect when I layed down a sealent at the end. I used the cedar wedges as corner anchors. And to finnish it off, I pecked about the grounds, after the guinea hens, gathering up their spotted white feathers (what a jerk, they muttered). I drilled holes for these, and layed them in with some wood glue. Too much? Maybe for Siler City, but not for Shakori.</div><div><br />

</span></div><div style="text-align: left;">Well, I probably should have called it a day at this point, I had gained the tickets I was trying to earn, and probably several ticks on top. But I guess I felt needed, and was having fun, and so that pretty well sealed the deal. So, I did another one. But if there was any question remaining on the last one, on this one, it is confirmed that I got carried away..</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">From the list, I chose another campground needing a sign, this one called Middle Earth...</div><div style="text-align: left;">Middle Earth....seems so......Metal.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
